Mock Trials
The case of overconsumption of sweets in America.
The Question: To what extent should the Federal Government advocate against the overconsumption of sugar?
My Job: I was to act as a lawyer for the side that opposes government intervention within the diet of Americans.
My Witnesses:
Justice Milton Tingling- The Judge that ruled over the case of Mayor Bloomberg's attempt to ban large sodas in New York, and ultimately denied Mayor Bloomberg's attempt.
Free Market Economist Milton Friedman- The purpose of this witness is to address the issues of supply, demand and the economic side effects.
John Locke- The Founder of Classic Liberalism, John Locke served as a witness to supports to the natural rights of Americans, when exactly the government should intervene and the purpose of a truly people-focused government.
The Significance of This Trial:
In the Mayor Bloomberg case held in New York, the Mayor proposed a subjective ban of large soft drink. As health conscious as the ban may sound, there was a significant backlash to his proposal. Not only did this ban seem random ill-thought over, most Americans heard of the case and did not appreciate such an interference on their choice of food, whether New York or nation-wide. For our class mock trial, we decided to take a step further and assume that the war on sugar was not bound to just sodas, but every other food containing high amounts of sweeteners. In the end, the result of the trial were unexpected and surprisingly reasonable.
